A pop-up says your computer is infected. A caller says they are from Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, or your bank. A text says your package is stuck or your account is locked. These messages are built to scare you into acting fast.

Warning signs to watch for
- Someone you did not call asks for remote access to your computer
- You are asked to pay with gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency
- A pop-up tells you to call a phone number to fix a virus
- The message says to keep it secret or to act right now
- A link or sender address looks almost right, but not quite
Real companies do not ask for gift cards, and they do not call out of the blue to fix your computer.
